Whatever Session – 45 – Hark & Dan – Bashment 2010-2014 – Notting Hill Carnival Special – 14-08-2014 by Hark1karan on Mixcloud

Welcome to the third and final show for this years carnival whatever session series. This one is all about bashment bangers between 2010 and 2014. It goes without saying that Vybz Kartel does feature heavily. Despite him being sent to jail and the morality of his music, we just want to concentrate on his music and the joy he bought to his people. He’s a controversial figure who divides opinion, however you can’t deny his influence and the connection has with his loyal audience. He is nicknamed ‘world boss’! That says everything about him that you need to know. Also I forgot to include his smash ‘Dancehall Hero‘, so I thought I’d drop it here. The track title and lyrics signifying his popularity and dominance.

I also wanted to say before Vybz the king of dancehall/bashment was Mavado. He’s now a seasoned pro in the dancehall world, hence why I included, ‘So Special’ and ‘Gangster for Life’. Both classics from around 2007 that always get dropped by those in the know. He undeniably always has the best hooks in the game as he demonstrated in last years ‘At The Top’.  Track 15 in the mix.

Bashment is one of the dominant sounds from the Caribbean and it’s always strongly represented by the British Caribbean community. Extremely loud sound-systems, screaming MCs, sirens and OTT daggering is what you’ll see at these popular systems. The popularity of the sound is backed by the number of artists releasing hit after hit. Popcaan, Konshens, Aidonia and Alkaline have all dropped hits in recent years. In addition to that we have a number of smash hit songs like ‘Whine and Kotch’, ‘Pon Di Cocky’, ‘Pull Up To Mi Bumper’ and ‘Gyal Bruk Out’. Let’s just say the we’ve seasoned the mix well, like a good jerk marinade.

Oh yeah before we forgot, we want to show love to Soca and Afro-beat. These sounds will mostly be as popular as bashment, if not more. They have been in previous years. These are the sounds that most yuppies don’t necessarily understand as they aren’t represented in mainstream media. Having said that Fuse ODG’s Antenna changed all that when it became a summer hit in the mainstream, as well as the underground. A well deserved champion for the sound of African youths in the capital. As for Soca, this is the most popular for those who really love to dance and shake it. My friends from Trinidad love Soca. It is there sound after all. This is the music you’ll hear blasting out the large floats around the parade route. Bunji Garlin flew the flag for soca in 2013 with his anthem ‘Differentology’. Soca is bound to make you smile and shake-a-leg. Those those reasons it would have been criminal not to play either of those songs.

On that note I’ll leave you to enjoy the mix. Thank for taking time to read and listen. Appreciated with much love. Thanks from me and Dan.

Peace and stay blessed.
