Best of 2016: Gio’s Top 12 Songs

December 13, 2016

Hiatus – Precipice

Whatever Hiatus do, they will be in my top 10. Precipice is their single of 2016. It is dreamy, melancholic and empowering. There are a few things better in life than finding a track like this. When you are in need, when you find yourself on the verge of a precipice.

Damu the Fudgemunk – Colorful Storm

Despite the track being over 10 years old, it’s finally been released on this years LP, Full Time. Those who know me, also know how much I love Damu, one of the most underrated and obscure hip-hop producers around. His rare gig in Berlin last year was one that will never be forgotten.

Nick Cave – Rings of Saturn

Let us be honest, 2016 won´t be remembered as the best year in history. And this is why Skeleton Tree is better than any other release, as it captures the struggle of the year, the loss of friends, loved ones, and humanity drifting towards collective madness. Thanks Nick for this dark gem.

NxWorries – Get Bigger

Probably the most interesting RnB/Hip-Hop release of the year. Anderson Paak & Knxwledge matched up for a release that unites some of the best elements of modern hip-hop.

A Tribe Called Quest – Whatever Will Be

One word comes to mind when you hear the Tribe. Influential. A testament to Phife Dawg who sadly passed away this year. It is probably the release of the year. Plenty of top class feature artists, heavy bass and rich lyrics. All you can ask for from a great hip-hop album.

Kiasmos – Orgoned

Introversion and electronic music. A bit of Radiohead, a bit of Chemical Brothers, Kiasmos have been a really nice and interesting find for 2016.

Moderat – eating hooks

It’s probably because I finally got the chance to see them live this year, but they really have developed a trademark sound. Their 2016 III is absolutely spot on. Brilliant, track after track (The track has a 1 minute intro).

Yogisoul, Ivan Ave, Moruf – Kodak Gold

By far, the best hip-hop Scandinavia is producing at the moment. The Oslo based producer Yogisoul released his first LP, By Nights this year. A mix of deep bass instrumentals, mellow melodies and great vocals. This track features Ivan Ave and Moruf, which also happens to be the most significant track on the album.

Radiohead – Tinker Sailor Soldier Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief

Classic Radiohead. The distortions, the dirty sound, the high pitch and slightly off-beat vocals all the elements that have made them who they are today. Maybe not their finest piece of work, but even then, there are some gems in a Moon Shaped Pool which are worth a listen or 2.

Figub Brazlevic – Dat Hardcore Ish

European hip-hop has probably never been so vibrant. Led by the ever evolving Berlin instrumental scene. Figub Brazlevic is one of the most appreciated beat makers out there and for his latest work he featured with some of the best up and coming rappers from across the continent, such as UK based Teknical Development. So much for Brexit.

Thievery Corporation – Let the Chalise Blaze

Thievery Corporation will soon be back with a new album judging from this single. It looks like they will be back to their original sound. Just can´t wait to see them at the Roundhouse this coming March (2017).

Oddisee – Right Side of the Bed

Hands down my favourite hip-hop artist. A producer, rapper, rhyme writer of the highest calibre. A multi talented artist that is finally getting the recognition he deserves. 2016, The Odd Tape is an instrumental release with some of Oddisee´s classic traits.
